Well, dig in, because it's Microsoft's turn to confuse lawyers the world over with this latest USPTO doc, submitted in November of 2010. 18 May 2012, 7:14 pm
There's been hints of it coming as early as February, but we now have a smoking gun at the FCC: the Galaxy S III is coming to T-Mobile. A Samsung SGH-T999 has popped up at the agency sporting newly added 1,700MHz AWS support that's the telltale sign of a T-Mobile device, along with the T999 name itself (the T989 is the network's Galaxy S II). It also totes 850MHz and 1,900MHz WCDMA bands being used for HSPA+ data rather than just voice, a clue that the phone is ready for refarmed GSM spectrum....

GameStop Mobile, as it's called, is that rare bird of an AT&T-based MVNO that relies on a bring-your-own-device strategy. As long as your hardware works on AT&T's 850MHz and 1,900MHz bands and isn't locked to another carrier, you can bring any GSM- and HSPA-based phone (or data-only device) and use it contract-free: rates start at anything from a strictly pay-...

Diablo III: demon-cleaving, refined
18 May 2012, 11:25 am
Third time's the charm? Let's draw a distinction between a “sequel to a game” and an “installment in a franchise.” In a sequel, the developers examine what made the original game work and then expand on those ideas. Sometimes that work produces stark differences. The near-decade between Fallout II and Fallout III, for example, saw that game switch the perspective from isometric to first-person, the combat change from turn-based to real-time with pauses, an...

National Review writer Katrina Trinko ended up with egg on her face Friday evening after accusing Democratic senate candidate Elizabeth Warren of plagiarism -- a charge that was quickly debunked. Trinko published an item early Friday evening bearing the accusatory title, "Plagiarism In Elizabeth Warren's 2006 Book." The article, which appeared on the Review's "Corner" blog, made the following claim about "All Your Worth," a personal finance guide Warren published with her daughter: ["All Your ...
Chris Weigant: Friday Talking Points -- Good Enough for My Money
18 May 2012, 8:41 pm
So, it's official. Disco is dead. The passing of Donna Summer brings to a close an era in American music that... well... if you didn't live through it, it's hard to explain. Especially the outfits people wore in public. And making John Travolta a movie star (although he did atone somewhat, by genuflecting to the 1950s immediately thereafter, in Grease). Music history aside, it was a somewhat eclectic week in politics. The House -- in one of their rare moments when they actually meet and att...
Ethan Rome: More Hypocrisy From GOP's Crack Team of Health Care Con Artists
18 May 2012, 7:00 pm
The Republican leaders in Congress have mostly defined themselves by what they're against, but now they've announced what they're for -- the most popular parts of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). I can only imagine the political identity crisis this is causing within the GOP. Their hallmark is opposing anything the President supports, even if it started as a Republican legislative proposal, and now they've plunged themselves into a partisan political abyss of their own making: they are supporting...
Barack Obama Raises $25.7 Million, 43% From Small Donors
18 May 2012, 6:36 pm
WASHINGTON -- The reelection campaign of President Barack Obama reported raising $25.7 million in April, down from $35 million raised in March. While the campaign raised fewer dollars last month than the previous one, its support from small donors remained high with 43.7 percent, or $11.23 million, coming from donors giving less than $200 in total. Big donors were still a source of support with donors giving $2,500 and above contributing $3.69 million in April. The employment categories that ...
The Occupy Movement Descends On Chicago For NATO Summit
18 May 2012, 6:35 pm
Busloads of Occupy activists have been arriving in Chicago to protest the summit of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. "We're trying to bring a critical mass of people back to the Occupy movement," said Nicole Powers, an activist and managing editor of Suicide Girls, a website that has extensively chronicled the Occupy movement since it began on Wall Street. "We want to get mass involvement back into the Occupy movement as we move into an election season." Protestors plan to gather in Dal...
Hibaaq Osman: The Burqa That We Are All Wearing
18 May 2012, 6:31 pm
In 2011, France campaigned to ban niqabs -- face veils worn by Muslim women -- in an effort that center-right President Nicolas Sarkozy said was critical in ensuring women's rights. Much debated and contested, the veil ban -- which affected only 2,000 women out of 5 to 6 million Muslims living in France -- was supposedly an example of France doing the right thing: fighting the backwards Arab-Muslim traditions that oppress women. However, in doing so, it failed to recognize its own role in stripp...
Obama Campaign Spending: Text Messages, Online Ads, Planned Parenthood And Apple Computers
18 May 2012, 5:45 pm
WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama's reelection campaign spent more than $14.6 million in April, ending up with more than $115 million cash on hand, according to a filing it made with the Federal Election Commission on Friday afternoon. The numbers show a campaign taking in far more money than it is spending, though that may change with massive television ad campaigns beginning in May. The filing also shows that the campaign is banking on person-to-person contact and staff-oriented campaigni...

You're f*cked. Well, not exactly. But you won't have it easy. First, you're going to have a hell of a hard time finding a job. The job market you're heading into is still bad. The Chronicles of Mitt: May 18, 2012
18 May 2012, 7:00 pm
Hello, human diary. It is I again, Mitt Romney, your better. Today has not been a good day. I mentioned before that the previous Republican occupant of the White House had endorsed me; for some reason this led to me having to have a phone conversation with him today. I am still unclear why. He is a nice enough fellow, and I attempted to bond with him over our mutual love of elevators, and riding in elevators, and putting things into elevators. I believe he enjoyed my banter. (I also inv...

Mitt Romney, George W. Bush share post-endorsement phone call
18 May 2012, 4:20 pm
Oh my God, I will never live this down. (Kevin Lamarque/Reuters) The other day George W. Bush, or as Mitt Romney calls him, He Who Must Not Be Named, gave Mitt a rousing endorsement in the form of a four-word "I'm for Mitt Romney" muttered from behind closing elevator doors. Given that, I would have liked to be a fly on the wall for this one: Bush and Romney spoke with each other after the former president offered his fleeting support for the Republican candidate in an elevator this week, a pe...
Scott Walker says if he wins Wisconsin recall it'll be more of the same, but more inclusive. Honest.

Scott Walker signs last year's bill eliminating collective bargaining. (Darren Hauck/Reuters) Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker is telling reporters that if he survives his June 5 recall election, he'll be more inclusive. Just not that much more inclusive, y'know? "I still think people elected me before in November 2010 and they'll elect me again because they want me to fix things," Walker said. "They want me to keep the focus and attention on fixing things. We're just going to make sure we've got a...
Mitt Romney praises Meg Whitman as she prepares to lay off 30,000 workers
18 May 2012, 3:06 pm
If Mitt Romney shares Meg Whitman's vision of "Jobs for America" ... you'd better watch out. (Brian Snyder/Reuters) Meg Whitman never said she liked to fire people, but on the same day that news of her plans to lay off 30,000 Hewlett-Packard employees leaked to the press, Mitt Romney felt inspired to lavish praise on her managerial skills and to wistfully lament that she lost her gubernatorial campaign: I wish Californians had elected Meg Whitman. She would have been more successful and explai...

18 May 2012, 2:32 pm
As you watch this or read the transcript, keep in mind that from 2001 to 2003—during which time the Bush administration launched two wars, one of which we are fighting to this day, and two rounds of tax cuts for the wealthy—Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels was George W. Chuck Schumer Is Ruining Facebook IPO Day For One Shareholder
17 May 2012, 5:19 pm
As you may have heard, earlier this afternoon, Facebook priced its initial public offering at $38/share, valuing co-founder Eduardo Saverin’s stake at approximately $2.9 billion. Since Saverin conveniently renounced his US citizenship last week, he will avoid paying millions in capital gains taxes and hang on to an estimated $67-$100 million that would have otherwise gone to the government, news that did not sit right with Chuck Schumer. Did the Senator from New York call the guy a “...
